Hello!

It's been a few months. :)

My last post was somewhere at the end of November 2022, so It's obviously been some time.
Anyways, just a quick update:
  • Wrote a few important exams.
  • Planned my first trip to London.
  • Restarted learning Python + writing Shellscripts.
  • Found some new friends.
  • Started a sketch- and scrapbook.
  • New hyperfixation.
I'm too lazy to actually write a long entry, so I'll do it later. :)

(Saving this on here, as I probably have to walk people through an average working day at an internship fair.)

Internship at a daily retirement home

  • 08:00 AM: Arrive at the facility, get tested on monday and thursday, measure temperature to check for feaver, write down when you came and your temperature on the registration paper. Until 10:00 AM the Old people arrive (bus, relatives..) get registered and get ''escorted'' to main hall for breakfast. Interns do the dishes, help out in the main hall filling up water or food or help at the front registering the old people that arrive.
  • 10:00 AM: 30 Minute warm-up, used for gymnastics, dancing or story-telling in the main hall. Interns participate in these activities or do the dishes.
  • 10:30 AM: Old residents get split into two groups and do the group activities that are available that day. As an example; one group decides to stay in the main hall and play bingo, while the others go and play ''Mensch ärgere dich nicht'', a popular German Boardgame.
  • 11:30 AM: 30 Minute of free time. The residents mostly just wait in the main hall at their tables and talk with one another, waiting for lunch to be served. Interns mostly just wait until they can serve lunch, maybe fill up water. The other interns and I usually played Sudoku because there wasn't much to do.
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch time. Residents eat the food of the day. After interns served food they wait so they can bring the dishes to the kitchen. Lunch usually takes doesn't take that long and the dishes are finished cleaning at 30.
  • 12:30 PM: Silent free time. Most residents lay down on the couches and reclining armchairs and sleep until 2:15 PM. Interns are free to do what they want, personally I used the time to do the homework we were assigned by the school.
  • 2:15 PM: Early Activity time that lasts for 15 minutes. The residents that wake up early get brought into the main hall, while workers and interns entertain them with stories or fun activities.
  • 2:30 PM: ''Kaffee und Kuchen Zeit.'' Residents get served cake, cookies or other pastries, often with coffee or juice of their choice. Interns serve them their food and drinks and then help out in the kitchen as soon as first dishes get brought into the kitchen.
  • 3:00 PM: First residents get picked up or brought home by either their relatives or the bus service that the facility provides. At this point interns stay and work in the kitchen, clean up, bring out the trash and bring in any deco that could break during the night.
  • 4:00 PM: Last residents get picked up and facility gets closed. Everyone finishes and gets off their shift at this time.

Back for the second post ever!

Today, I'm just going to reflect on the last 2 weeks, because my weekend wasn't eventful at all, I've just been laying sick in bed.

Two weeks ago I started my internship at a retirement home. The first week, especially the first few days, I didn't do much, especially because I have major problems regarding interacting with strangers or just people I don't know well. And yes, I do realise in hindsight that doing my internship at a SOCIAL facility where you have to INTERACT with STRANGERS was probably a very stupid thing to do considering my poor social skills, but I still wanted to try it out, considering my mom also worked in a retirement home for a short time.

Anyways, I started doing a few things out of my comfort zone later on in the week, which resulted in me almost breaking out crying, which all of the workers + my friend, who also did her internship at the same facility, saw. The workers proceeded to talk to me and told me I didn't have to do anything that I did not want to do, which was nice of them, but that wouldn't stop me from trying over and over again, (without crying though!).

Also, funny thing that I wanted to add:

The first week, my friend and I both had the same shift, which was 8 AM to 4 PM, both of us essentially working the entire day there. Turns out, we both weren't allowed to work 8 hours a day, (thank you, JArbSchG). Our personal internship worker kicked us both out on friday, at 12:30 PM, and we then had to work seperate shifts the next week. There also was a rumor in my neighborhood that we did something wrong and got kicked out because of that, but that's a story for another day.

The second week was basically the same, the only difference was that i slowly knew some of the names of the clients that came every day.. and also the seperate shifts from my friend, which in theory makes sense, but I'm very forgetful, so not having my friend there for the first or last 2-3 hours, depending on the day, was hell.

There wasn't anything special that happened, except that I stayed at home on friday, because I was sick.

Seems like I'm done for now.

I'll probably do a post soon where I describe my average working day there and all the things I have to do, just to archive it in case I need it for a presentation.

If there is anyone reading, see you soon and have a good day. :)
